Sydney Metro City & Southwest – Tunnel and Station Excavation Works
Sydney Metro City & Southwest is Stage 2 of Australia’s largest public transport project that will extend the metro rail from Sydney’s booming northwest region to Bankstown in the southwest.
Delivery of the Sydney Metro City & Southwest project is broken into the following packages:
Early and Enabling Works
Tunnel and Station Excavation Works (TSE)
Central Station Works (CSW)
Southwest Station and Corridor Works (SSC)
Stations, Mechanical and Electrical Works (STME)
Trains, Systems, Operation and Maintenance (TSOM)
Over Station Development (OSD).
Tunnel and Station Excavation Works (TSE)
John Holland CPB Ghella (JHCPBG) has been awarded the $2.81 billion Tunnel and Station Excavation (TSE) contract to design and construct the tunnels and station civil works.
With a new crossing under Sydney Harbour, the 15.5-kilometre twin railway tunnels will run from Chatswood, through the CBD and then to Sydenham. The project includes building complex underground structures for six new stations in Crows Nest, Victoria Cross, Barangaroo, Martin Place, Pitt Street and Waterloo.
TSE Works Scope
Delivery of the TSE Works contract has started with completion due in mid-2021. The scope includes:
Twin 15.5-kilometre tunnels with permanent lining, between Chatswood and Sydenham, including a section under Sydney Harbour from Barangaroo to Blues Point, using five tunnel boring machines (TBMs):
– Two hard rock TBMs will tunnel about 6.2 kilometres each from Chatswood to Blues Point
– Two hard rock TBMs will tunnel about 8.1 kilometres each from Marrickville to Barangaroo
– One specialised soft ground TBM will tunnel twice, about 1.0 kilometre each time, from Barangaroo to Blues Point
Excavation and civil works for six new metro railway stations at Crows Nest, Victoria Cross, Barangaroo, Martin Place, Pitt Street and Waterloo
Two dive structures to allow trains to enter and exit the tunnels at Chatswood and Marrickville
Fifty-seven cross passages between the twin tunnels spaced about 200-240 metres apart
A crossover cavern at Barangaroo to allow trains to cross from one track to the other
A shaft with permanent concrete lining at Artarmon for a traction substation (the substation will be constructed by a follow-on contractor)
Excavation of a temporary shaft at Blues Point to retrieve TBMs and backfilling and remediation of the site to its existing condition
Establishment and operation of a temporary precast facility to manufacture the TBM tunnel lining segments at Marrickville
Temporary barging facilities at Blues Point and Barangaroo to facilitate the delivery and removal of TBMs and the removal of spoil from the shaft and under harbour sections of the tunnels
Earthworks and drainage for a future train stabling facility in Marrickville.
