Mokran Solar Power Plants Complex was constructed in the eastern province of Kerman over a period of six months. The opening of the plant took place in the presence of Iran’s Energy Minister Hamid Chitchian, Deputy Minister and the Head of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency organization (SATBA) and other government officials, on Monday.
The plant holds the capacity of approximately 20 megawatts and was built with an investment of US $27 million by Swiss company Durion, supervised by a German company, Adore. The plant includes a total of 76,912 solar panels, each producing 260 watts over an area of 44 hectares and will be operated by Mokran Solar Energy Co.
Iran’s Minister of Energy Hamid Chitchian said the capacity of Iran’s various renewable power plants has more than doubled in comparison to four years ago.
“The current capacity of renewable power plants is 420MW and this year, another 600MW will be added to this capacity,” he announced at the ceremony.
“The government has shown its interest in supporting renewable energies by setting incentive policies such as the guaranteed purchase of electricity from power plants,” the Minister stated.
In addition to this, Mokran Solar Energy has also just commenced the construction of a 100 megawatt solar power plant, which will be the largest in the Middle East. The plant will be located between Kerman and Ban in a 150-hectare plot. The Minister also stated that the development of this and more upcoming solar plants will assist with transforming Kerman into a solar city.
