The annual month-long Mines Safety Roadshow, hosted by the Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety, commenced today to raise awareness and share safety solutions, rather than provide professional development.
The roadshow kicks off today in Kalgoorlie, before travelling to Leonora, Newman, Cloudbreak, Tom Price, Karratha, Port Hedland, Bunbury, Mandarah, Geraldton and finishing off in Perth.
This year’s theme is ‘a day in the life of a safety and health representative’ and will focus on the key roles they play in the consultation and promotion of safe work practices within the minerals industry. The roadshow will give the industry an update on what is happening in mines safety and health in Western Australia from both regulatory and industry perspectives. The program is set to showcase three new safety videos, as well as the emergency management for Western Australian mines, code of practice and workshops on mentally healthy workplaces and investigations in serious and fatal accidents.
Safety and health representatives, safety committee members, supervisors and others responsible for safety and health are encouraged to attend.
Acting WA Mines and Petroleum Minister Francis Logan said the roadshows are one of the department’s most important proactive events for mine safety.
“We all have a role to play in improving safety on site; attending events like this allows industry and regulators to come together to discuss safety issues and how we can do better,” he said, “safety is one of the Government’s number one priorities and I’d like to thank the safety representatives who play a very important role in the safety of workers on site.”
The event is free but pre-registration is required.
