The Northwood Hill Prospect sits within Torrens’ EL7331 and is one of several gold Prospects within the company’s broader Mt Piper Project in Central Victoria. MAGSPEC Airborne Surveys will complete a 3,922 line-kilometre survey over a 5-7 day period, subject to weather. The Northern Australian Infrastructure Facility (NAIF) has achieved contractual close for a $150 million loan towards the development of the Coburn Heavy Mineral Sands (HMS) Project in Western Australia. Coburn, 100 per cent owned by Strandline Resources Limited, is a world-class mineral sands deposit located 240 kilometres north of the Port of Geraldton. According to an Updated Definitive Feasibility Study released in June 2020, Coburn has the potential to produce 58 kilotonnes per annum (ktpa) of zircon, 110 ktpa of ilmenite and 24 ktpa of rutile [1]. Alcoa explores technology to reduce emissions in alumina refining

The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) has awarded $11.3 million in funding to Alcoa of Australia Limited to demonstrate technology that can electrify the production of steam in its alumina refining process using renewable energy. Alumina refining is an energy-intensive process that uses high-pressure steam to produce the heat required to process bauxite into alumina. Alumina can then be converted to aluminium in a smelting process. In 2019, alumina refining accounted for over 14 million tonnes of carbon dioxide in Australia, which represents approximately 24 per cent of Australia’s scope 1 manufacturing emissions. New refinery crane now operational at Olympic Dam

BHP has advised that a new electro-refinery crane is now operational at Olympic Dam in South Australia. The 95-tonne crane with a 32-metre span will be used to submerge 360-kilogram copper anodes into the refinery’s 768 individual electrolytic cells, which extract the purified final copper product that Olympic Dam exports to global customers. With dual lift capability and automatic laser positioning, the crane has the capacity to carry over 20 tonnes at a time, at a maximum travel speed of three metres per second. The Federal Government has committed up to $600M in the 2021-22 Budget, for Snowy Hydro Limited to construct a 660 megawatt (MW) open cycle gas turbine at Kurri Kurri in the Hunter Valley. Federation University Australia is set to build Australia’s first wind turbine training tower at the university’s Mt Helen campus in Ballarat. One of the Port of Port Hedland’s first shipping berths, Berth 3, will be upgraded as part of the Western Australian Government’s $5.5 billion WA Recovery Plan, with works commencing to remediate the rock wall and to refurbish the wharf piles. Singapore’s Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) has signed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) with six companies to establish the Maritime Decarbonisation Centre to be set up in Singapore. Rio Tinto’s ISAL smelter in Iceland has been certified by the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) for meeting the highest internationally recognised standards for responsible aluminium production. The ISAL smelter commenced operations in 1969. It now produces approximately 184,000 tonnes of aluminium per year and employs around 500 workers on-site.
